How the lists are put together

01

Google Maps searches, city by city

Every list starts from Google Maps searches for the trade in the city, collected with Apify. Across the 26 cities the searches returned 2,332 places.

Langley covers the City of Langley and the Township of Langley, including Walnut Grove, Willoughby, Murrayville, Fort Langley and Aldergrove.

02

Filtered before anything is ranked

Some places are set aside first, and two Google listings that share one website count as one firm.

Set aside

Listings Google marks as closed, firms with no working website of their own (a dead, parked or taken-over domain, or only a social media page), directories and lead sites, retailers, franchise outlets, single-trade shops and suppliers, places outside the city's area, and places whose Google category is not a building or renovation trade.

03

Weighed on four things

The firms that remain are weighed on the Google rating, the number of Google reviews behind it, how closely the services the firm offers match the trade, and the work in its portfolio. Ranks are our editorial order, read from the top, with those four things weighed together.

Services count where the firm's own website shows them, or its Google listing when the site cannot be read. A firm that shows no work in the list's trade, or one specialty only (roofing, waterproofing, cabinetry, insulation or commercial fit-outs), sits below every firm that does, so the top places go to firms that do the work.

04

Up to 10 firms a list

A list goes up only when at least 5 firms qualify for it. A firm goes on at most two lists in a city, the trades its services match best. When a list would otherwise fall short of 10, a firm already on two lists can fill a place, after the other firms whose sites show the same work, and a list that reaches 5 only that way does not go up.

05

Card facts from the firm's own website

The tagline, the facts under “Why it ranks here” and the service chips on a card are written from the firm's own website, and each fact is checked against the page it came from before it goes up.

Where a firm's website could not be read, its tagline and service chips come from its Google listing, and its card shows what we hold instead: its Google rating and review count, where it is based and the services on its card.

06

Dated and rebuilt

Ratings, review counts, phone numbers and categories are Google's, and every list shows the date they were read. Lists are rebuilt from fresh Google Maps searches, and a firm that closes drops off at the next rebuild.

How to read a card

Best overall and Best for

Place 1 is the strongest firm overall. Places 2 to 4 each carry a badge for the kind of project or client they suit best.

Google rating

Five stars filled to the exact score, with the number of Google reviews behind it.

Why it ranks here

Up to six facts from the firm's own website, such as years in business, awards, memberships and warranties, or what its Google listing shows when the site could not be read.

Website and phone

Visit website opens the firm's own site, and Call dials the number on its Google listing. You deal with the firm directly.

Questions about the lists

How do I correct a listing?

Send the correction through the form on the list your firm page, with a link to the list it appears on. Phone numbers, websites, ratings and categories come from the firm's Google Business Profile, so a change there also carries through at the next rebuild.

Can a firm be taken off the site?

Yes. Send a removal request through the same form with the firm's name and website. The listing comes off every page it appears on and stays off.

Why does a city have no list for some trades?

A list goes up only when at least 5 firms in the city qualify for it after the filters.

What do the lists cover?

General contractors, custom home builders, renovation contractors, kitchen renovations, bathroom renovations, basement renovations and home additions, in 26 cities across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.
